In 1972, a mysterious detonation of about 25 sea mines off the coast of Vietnam puzzled the U.S. military until it was attributed to a solar anomaly. The Halloween solar storms of 2003 are another stark reminder, having disrupted over half of Earth’s satellites and costing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages, including the destruction of a $640 million U.S. satellite.
When Auroras Burn: The Carrington Event Echoes
The largest recorded solar storm, the Carrington Event of 1859, lit up the tropics with auroras and set telegraph machines ablaze. This historical event serves as a sobering reminder of what could happen today. A modern recurrence could cripple our power grids and rack up to $2.6 trillion in economic damages in America alone, according to a study by Lloyd’s and Atmospheric and Environmental Research Inc.

Dr. Hannah Schunker, a solar physicist from the University of Newcastle, highlights our increased risk. “As we grow ever more dependent on space-based technologies like GPS, even a minor disturbance could ripple through every aspect of our lives—from banking to emergency services.”

Monitoring sunspots, those planet-sized magnetic islands on the sun’s surface, helps scientists predict significant solar events. “These sunspots are the birthplaces of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which, if aligned correctly, could hit Earth within hours,” notes Dr. Schunker. These flares and ejections can intensify radiation exposure at higher altitudes, posing risks to flights over the poles and endangering astronauts with increased radiation.
